Although bellhop Todd Brotzman doesn’t have a lot going on in his life, the worst awaits him. It begins when he arrives at work one day and is sent up to the hotel’s penthouse, where he discovers millionaire Patrick Spring has been murdered. An odd chain of events that unfolds leads to Todd becoming a person of interest in the crime and losing his job. That is when he meets Dirk Gently, a fast-talking, eccentric detective who has been hired to investigate the murder. He believes that he and Todd are destined to solve the mystery together. Once Dirk is able to convince Todd to work with him, the latter is visited by wild, dangerous characters — all associated with Dirk — who complicate his life further. Dirk, meanwhile, is being hunted by seemingly deranged assassin Bart, who almost kills a man she mistakenly believes to be the detective.
This show is honestly amazing. It combines the supernatural world of psychic powers with mystery, a detective that solves cases by simply doing what he wants, and the power of coincidence.
So far I’ve seen up to episode 4, and I have enjoyed it immensely. Elijah Wood plays Todd, the poor sod that gets pulled into the world of Dirk Gently because it was meant to be, and the acting is amazing. I know Elijah Wood best for his role in LOTR, and it took me a few episodes and some googling to realise who it was. His ability to fall into roles is superb and comes across well in this show.
The characters are diverse and different, and whilst there could have been more cultures brought in there is still a lot of individualistic characters.
One of the main characters introduced is Farrah, who is basically the most BAMF of the
good guys (AKA her, Todd and Dirk). She is a trained Bodygaurd and is smart, and she is determined to find and save Lydia Spring. Easily a loveable character, the more you find out about her the easier ti is to adore her.
Dirk gently is a character that is easy to love aswell, since he’s so OTT and has clearly been through a lot, and he has such a contradictory nature and a mysterious past. He also seems to freak out more after the initial jump into danger, whilst Todd has a tendency to freak out before the danger and then be determined more than anything once he’s actually IN danger.
But out of all of the characters in the sh
ow, I have to admit that my favourite characters are the Rowdy 3, AKA Project Incubus. You can pretty much guess what their abilities are based on the name for them. Them ebing my fabvourite characters in the show
is especially true after they basically take in Amanda, Todd’s younger sister, and start looking after her.
They help her deal with her medical condition, which I
strongly suspect, and has pretty much been confirmed, to be linked to psychic abilities.
I have no idea how my feelings for the characters will continue to chnage, but I’m looking forwrads to finding out.
This is a show I would highly recommend watching, and I’m looking forwards to seeing more and finishing this season myself!
